F-1 Students
Applying for the F-1 Student Visa
There are many steps involved in the visa process, so please ensure that you are well versed before applying.
When to Apply
You must apply for your student visa well in advance before the start date stated on your I-20. This is important because it may take several weeks for you to be scheduled for an interview and or obtain the F-1 student visa.
Please note that U.S. consulates/embassies cannot issue an F-1 visa more than 120 days prior to your program start date. However, you may apply for an F-1 visa as soon as you receive your I-20. Please check the website of the consulate/embassy where you will apply for a visa for detailed instructions.

All new F-1 visa applicants are required to pay a one-time SEVIS free prior to applying for a visa. You can watch a step-by-step instructional video on how to pay the fee here.

This may vary based on U.S. embassy or consulate; please check with them. However, if you are travelling with a spouse or dependent, they will also be issued an individualized I-20, and you will need to take those forms with you. Please note you do not need to pay an additional SEVIS fee for an F-2 dependent.
