Mary Lahaj '92 Publishes a Memoir
June 13, 2024
Mary Lahaj, MA '92, has published a memoir titled Bird on a Wire. Mary is descended from Lebanese Muslim immigrants who arrived in the U.S. in the early 1900s. Her book covers themes such as inherited faith, self-identity, and assimilation to America.
Mary incorporates the unique perspectives of three generations on how one becomes an “American.” Her colorful life combines her personal quest to become a cheerleader with her family’s dream of building the first mosque in New England (1964).
Mary earned her MA in Islamic Studies and Christian/Muslim Relations at HIU. Fourteen years later, she was admitted to the Brigham & Women's Hospital chaplaincy residential program. “In my book, I have included some of my chaplaincy experiences, which is the kind of material that you can't make up!” Mary says.
Bird on a Wire reflects Mary’s interest and commitment to interfaith relations, which, she says, began at HIU.
