Dr. Cheryl Townsend Gilkes Donates Civil Rights Materials to HIU Library

February 8, 2023

Cheryl Townsend Gilkes library book donation

The library is extremely grateful for a recent gift of Civil Rights materials received from Hartford International University Distinguished Professor, Dr. Cheryl Townsend Gilkes.

These books will greatly enhance the library’s collection and will be an invaluable resource for our students. This generous donation includes nearly 100 titles, plus a full run of the African American Pulpit. These items focus on Civil Rights, Black Power, and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dr. Gilkes has assured us that she is pleased to be able to find a home for her beloved “children.” We are aware that it may be difficult to part with books that are such close friends, and we are grateful to Dr. Gilkes for her confidence that the Hartford International University Library can care for these items and provide access to them for students and the greater community into the future.

These materials have been integrated into the larger collection of the library but can be found in the catalog by searching “Gift of Dr. Cheryl Townsend Gilkes.”
