Professor Scott Thumma Interviewed for German Television Show

Professor Scott Thumma recently appeared on the German television show Galileo — similar to our 60 Minutes — in a piece about megachurches featuring Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas.

The show’s crew came to Hartford Seminary and filmed Professor Thumma, who is an expert on megachurches, in the seminary’s library.

Professor Thumma was asked a variety of questions, including:

• How do megachurches like Lakewood succeed in attracting so many people every week?
• Are megachurches what they appear to be or is there another layer?
• How much money is involved?
• Are they potentially exploiting or dangerous?
