The Hartford International University community mourns the passing of Louise Earle Loomis, Ed.D., widow of Worth Loomis, who became dean at HIU in 1999 following a long and successful business career.

During the time that Worth taught and served as dean, Louise became an important part of the HIU community. Professor Emerita Miriam Therese Winter fondly remembers many dinners and gatherings at the Loomis household.

Louise, 94, spent a lifetime as an educator. According to her obituary, she and Worth spent a year in Turkey after getting married in 1950, which "shaped her lifelong interest in improving people's lives."

The Loomises had six children while living in Ohio, then moved to Hartford in 1970. They lived in the West End, near HIU, for 38 years before moving to Duncaster in Bloomfield.

Louise taught science at Weaver High School, then found her niche leading workshops in critical creative thinking and problem solving. She earned a MA in Urban Education from the University of Hartford and a Doctorate in Creative Education from the University of Massachusetts.

She founded the New England Cognitive Center and the ThinkWell Center LLC and co-founded Trinity Academy at Trinity Episcopal Church. She also held faculty positions at Hartford College for Women, Fairfield University, Goodwin University, and University of Hartford.

She was involved in many community organizations and on the board of the Artists Collective in Hartford. Over the years, she received numerous awards recognizing her work, including a special recognition from Sen. Richard Blumenthal for her efforts in early childhood education.

Services will be held on Saturday, June 3, at 10 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, 120 Sigourney St., Hartford. Her full obituary can be read here.
