Dr. Walter Earl Fluker, Distinguished Professor of HIU's Howard Thurman Center, announced this month that The Papers of Howard Washington Thurman are now available online and accessible to the public. Dr. Fluker is the senior editor/director of the Howard Thurman Papers Project.

Founded in 1992, the mission of the Howard Thurman Papers Project is to preserve and promote Thurman’s vast documentary record, which spans 63 years and consists of approximately 58,000 items of correspondence, sermons, unpublished writings, and speeches. To achieve this mission, the project has published a five-volume print edition of Thurman’s works and now a digital edition of the volumes that is freely available online.

"Thanks to the Howard Thurman Papers Project in collaboration with The Center for Digital Editing at the University of Virginia, and a long list of editors, researchers, advisors, and funding institutions, we can make this free online treasure trove available to you." Dr. Fluker said.

The Howard Thurman Papers Project has received funding from the Lilly Endowment Inc., the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC), the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), the Henry Luce Foundation, the Pew Charitable Trusts, and the Family of Virginia Scardigli, former secretary of the Fellowship Church.

The project is also creating public education programs to bring Thurman's work to a broader audience.
