Webinar Series - Antisemitism and Islamophobia: Then and Now

Hartford International University for Religion and Peace will host a four-part lunchtime webinar series that explores the roots – and the current manifestations – of hatred and bigotry toward Jews and Muslims. Two scholars will focus on what’s happening today and two will delve into ancient and scriptural connections.

Each webinar will take place on a Tuesday in March, beginning March 5, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. EST.

Individual webinars are $10 each. For those who prefer not to pay or can't afford the ticket price, there is a free option.

March 5 – Sophia McGee on “What Is Antisemitism and How Do We Interrupt It?”

Sophia McGee works in the Central Office of Student Affairs at the City University of New York, where she is the Director of Student Engagement and Dialogue for the 25 CUNY Campuses. She is a founding member of the Center for Ethnic, Racial and Religious Understanding at Queens College, CUNY.

March 12 – Imam Chaplain Omer Bajwa on “Islamophobia Origins and Consequences”

Omer Bajwa serves as Director of Muslim Life in the Chaplain’s Office at Yale and has been engaged in religious service, interreligious engagement, and educational outreach since 2000. He earned his Graduate Certificate in Islamic Chaplaincy from Hartford International University in 2010. He is a frequent lecturer on topics including Islam in the United States and the intersections of culture, media, politics, and spirituality.

March 19 – Imam Zaid Shakir on “Anti-Islamic Bigotry through the Lens of the Qur’an”

Imam Zaid Shakir is a frequent speaker at local and national Muslim events and has emerged as one of the nation’s top Islamic scholars and a voice of conscience for American Muslims and non-Muslims alike. He has served as an adviser to many organizations and influential leaders, and is the Co-founder and Senior Faculty Member of Zaytuna College in Berkeley, CA.

March 26 – Dr. Amy-Jill Levine on “Antisemitism and the Pulpit: The Gospel of John, the Jews, and Holy Week”

Dr. Amy-Jill Levine is the Rabbi Stanley M. Kessler Distinguished Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies at Hartford International University. The recipient of prestigious awards too numerous to list, she was the first Jew to teach New Testament at Rome’s Pontifical Biblical Institute. She has given close to 1000 lectures on the Bible, Christian-Jewish relations, and Religion, Gender, and Sexuality across the globe.
