Prayer Vigil of Lament and Supplication to God
October 17, 2023
from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM
HIU is a community of individuals—students, faculty, staff, trustees, ambassadors, alumni, and community members—who have been deeply affected by the atrocities and violence in Israel and Palestine. We have and know children, family, friends, and colleagues who have all been directly involved in the trauma. We too are impacted by this trauma. We would especially like to lament the children who are suffering through this violence. So, we will gather together as a community and support each other as we, like Job, cry out in lament and anger at these afflictions, to offer up our supplications for mercy, and to petition God to guide us to peace. We will gather as human beings who all bring our pain and anger, that we might be in the same space together. Our vigil will include prayers from the Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions.
Our prayers are not a dialogue about these events. Everyday HIU listens and speaks with each other—we dialogue, we are not silent. We actively engage these weighty matters in our classrooms, in our offices, in our meetings, in our hallways, in our residence halls, and in our prayers. And, HIU is planning a specific event aimed at helping us reflect on the violence in Israel and Palestine. On this day, however, we will come together in prayer and silence, beseeching God together. It is important that we be in the same space, even as we offer up our own prayers.
The Spiritual Life Center will have spiritual companions available for those who would like individual sharing in the chapel following the prayer vigil in the meeting room. The readings will be livestreamed on our Facebook page.
No registration is necessary. All are welcome.
